Tadoba National Park – Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve

Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is a tiger reserve in Chandrapur District, Maharashtra, India. It includes Tadoba National Park and Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary. Maharashtra’s oldest Tadoba National Park created in 1955, the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve. It is also one of India’s 28 Project Tiger Reserve.

The National Park is 623 km in area, consisting of two forested rectangles of the Tadoba and Andhari range. The Tadoba National park derives its name from local tribal god “Taru” whereas the Andhari river flowing through the forests gives the sanctuary its name.

The forests mainly consist of teak and bamboo interspersed with grassy meadows while Tadoba National Park is rugged hilly terrain. The area has a wide and rich range of flora and fauna. Teak and bamboo trees dominate southern deciduous forests. There is vast diversity in fauna and various types of species are found here.

Tiger Population in Tadoba National Park

The major attraction in this place is the presence of tigers. the large herds of Chital and the stately Samber are often seen in the forest. Other attractions include the elusive barking Deer, the fleet-footed Chasing. The majestic Gaur, the robust Nilgai, The shy Sloth Bear, the whistling wild dogs, the omnipresent wild Boar and stealthy Leopard, etc. As the night falls the small Indian Civet The Palm Civet, the Rattle, The flying squirrel make their presence felt. In the backdrop of the famous Ram degi Temple, nature is at its best at Tadoba.

How to Reach

By Air-Nagpur (140 Km) is the nearest airport from where it takes 3-hour taxi rides to reach the park.
By Rail-Chandrapur (49 km) and Nagpur (151kms) are nearest railheads.
By Road-Nearest bus stop is Chandrapur and Chimur (32 km), but bus or cabs are also available from Chandrapur to Mohali Village.

History – Tadoba National Park There is a great history behind the name of Tadoba National Park. Tadoba or Taru was the name of the god of tribal people who reside in the dense  Tadoba National Park  region of the forest. It is believed that Taru was a chief of the village, who was killed in a legendary encounter with a tiger. After this, a shrine was made dedicated to the God Taru that exists under a huge tree and on the bank of Tadoba Lake. Likewise, ‘Andhari’ name was given due to the Andhari River that wanders through the forest. Earlier, the kings of Gond ruled this forest in the vicinage of the Chimur hills. During 1935, hunting was totally restricted, but later in the year 1955; the area of 116.54 sq. km (45.00 sq mi) was acknowledged as the  Tadoba National Park . Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary was made on the next forests in 1986 and later in the year 1995, the park & the sanctuary were combined together to form present India’s 41 “Project Tiger”-Tiger Reserves.
